Responsible for a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Principal Accountabilities:

• Comfortable with emergency situations such as Massive Transfusion Protocols' and Emergency Release', issuing uncrossmatched blood according to laboratory approved procedures
• Inspects/issues compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, and performs visual and temperature check on returned blood; disposes of improperly stored/labeled, punctured, outdated, contaminated or hemolyzed blood according to approved procedures
• Monitors blood and blood product inventory to ensure adequate supply for patient transfusion, orders blood and blood products when indicated; monitors inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies and notifies Blood Bank Supervisor or Leads when supply is low
• Participates in the training and instruction of new MLS' hired in the Blood Bank
• Performs routine and standardized tests as outline in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures (ABO/Rh/Antibody Screen, Antibody Identification, Direct Antiglobulin tests, compatibility tests, phenotyping, elution, etc.); completes proper documentation
• Performs special methods as outlined in the Standard Operation Procedure and/or Technical Manual in resolving difficulties or multiple antibodies, ABO discrepancies, Antibodies of Undetermined Specificity, incompatible crossmatch; completes documentation
• Performs transfusion reaction investigation and workups, testing and documenting according to Standard Operating Procedure
