Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
The Bioinformatics Engineer is responsible for supporting and managing web application development, databases, and data engineering aspects in a Clinical /NGS setting for Sonic Reference Laboratory.
Location: Austin, TX 78728
Status: Full-time
Schedule/Shift: Hybrid, Business hours
Responsibilities
- Maintain bioinformatics related clinical assay operations, implement updates, troubleshoot, and resolve daily bioinformatics tickets/issues/needs.
- Work on ways to automate manual processes and input/output throughout the workflow
- Work with instruments in the workflow, assist in connectivity and general troubleshooting
- Application of data engineering & automation techniques in a Clinical/NGS Lab Perform other duties as assigned. Maintain the diverse group's harmony.
Requirements
Skills:
- Ability to code in various programing Languages (Python, Shell, R, Java)
- Exposure to modern relational database design, development (PostgreSQL/MySQL/MsSQL)
- Ability to work with Linux operating systems (including in a HPC environment).
- Ability to effectively communicate technical components to non-technical staff
- Understanding of Next generation Sequence data analysis processes (Alignment/Variant Calling/Annotations/Gene Expression)
- Ability to identify and apply statistical methods for data analysis & visualization
- Familiarity on best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management (Git), build processes, and operations.
- Knowledge with front end web application development will be a plus
- Exposure to Django web framework is a plus
- Prior experience in a CAP/CLIA or NYSDOH certified clinical laboratory a plus
- Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff and working effectively in diverse teams.
- Strong focus on quality, accuracy and consistency in all tasks.
- Ability to meet deadlines while handling frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for data reporting, procedure documentation and SOP adherence.
Qualifications:
- Software/DB/programming languages: Python, DJANGO, SQL, HTML, CSS Node.JS and Shell scripting
- Operating systems, Linux, Windows
Education:
- MS in Biomedical Engineering/Computer Science/Bioinformatics, or
- Bachelors in Computer Science with 2 years' work experience in Bioinformatics/IT field
