Description
SMU seeks applications for the position of tenured Full/Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Applied Physiology and Sport Management (Position #: 6313) to begin in August 2025.
Position Expectations
The Chair acts as the primary academic and administrative leader for the Department, reporting directly to the Dean of the College. This role entails overseeing the Department’s strategic direction, fostering innovation in academic programs, collaborating with faculty on curriculum enhancements, managing budgets, and addressing personnel matters. The Chair is also responsible for fostering a strong research culture within the Department, supporting faculty in their scholarly endeavors, and promoting external funding opportunities to enhance research and academic initiatives. Additionally, the Chair will work closely with the College’s development team to advance fundraising efforts and represent the Department across the College, the SMU campus, and broader local, national, and international communities.
The Department Chair is a half-time administrative position that allows for active participation in research. In order to ensure adequate time to engage in research, an Assistant Department Chair may be identified to support many of the administrative aspects of the position.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
- An earned doctorate and/or post-doctoral training in a field aligned with sport management, sport analytics, applied physiology, kinesiology, public health, health policy or health analytics. Qualified candidates might also be considered for affiliation with the SMU Data Science or Technology and Education
- An ongoing record of scholarly work commensurate with rank of advanced associate or full professor with tenure. Full professors with a substantial record of impactful scholarship might be eligible for Glenn Simmons Endowed Professorship in Applied Physiology and Sport Management.
- A rigorous and highly productive research program that can generate external funding.
- A demonstrated administrative and leadership ability developed through prior experiences in administering a department, center, large grants, or programs.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience developing and/or sustaining collaborative partnerships and interdisciplinary initiatives in the health or sport management fields.
- Demonstrated mentorship of doctoral students and/or junior faculty.
- Experience serving in leadership roles in national professional organizations, grant review panels, or major editorial roles in their field.
