Summary

Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System is recruiting one Supervisory Medical Care Transport Technician within Specialty Care Service. Incumbent performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services). In addition to performing all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic - the incumbent will - as a regular and recurring part of their assignment - exercise supervisory authorities and responsibilities over the Ambulance Services Program (ASP).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 03/17/2025. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-10. The grade may have been in any occupation - but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year - it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade - as required by the announcement. In this instance - you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting time in grade requirements - you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-10 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include - but are not limited to: evaluate patients for emergent or non-emergent medical conditions - plan and carry out steps to handle problems and deviations in work assignments - collect patient information - assisting patients with complex life-threatening situations that may include setting up equipment and passing instruments to restore normal physiological function Maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment while promoting a sense of worth and dignity under the supervision of licensed personnel. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: First Response Interpersonal Skills Leadership Planning and Evaluating Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally - the work requires recurring bending - lifting - stooping - stretching - and positioning of patients. Duties

• Duties of the position include but aren't limited to: Supervisory Duties (25%): The Supervisory Paramedic will oversee/monitor all aspects of the Ambulance Services Program (ASP)
• Evaluates procedures/techniques of patient care for compliance with emergency medical service protocols
• Plans the work of the ASP employees - setting and adjusting both short and long-term priorities and goals
• Creates - adjusts - and approves ASP employee schedules as well as reviewing and approving leave requests in accordance with VA policy and ASP workload needs
• Paramedic Duties (60%): In addition to the supervisory duties highlighted above - the Supervisory Paramedic performs all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic
• Incumbent must the have the knowledge and ability to supervise - lead - and perform the following duties/activities: Responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses - sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening
• Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance
• Supervisory Paramedics shall perform patient triage and take/records patient's vital signs as needed
• Incumbent performs physical examinations and obtains patient history - assesses status of patient's neurological system - cardiovascular system - circulatory system - skeletal system - orthopedic system - motor and sensory skills - and level of consciousness
• Supervisory Paramedics shall have broad knowledge and skills sufficient to provide and gather information on the human body structure - function - illnesses and diseases - and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting and goals for the assigned patient for the purpose of communicating with the patients and nursing/medical staff members
• The Supervisory Paramedic makes an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols the one that is considered appropriate under the given circumstances
• The Supervisory Paramedic determines - with due regard to the patient's condition - if and how the patient can be moved and to which medical facility the patient should be transported
• Prioritizes treatments for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of advanced emergency medicine techniques - methods - and equipment during transport to the appropriate medical facility
• Ambulance/Transport Vehicle Operation (15%): The Supervisory Paramedic selects the most efficient route to and from sites - taking into consideration traffic patterns - health facility locations - etc
• Operates the emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems
• Incumbent shall have skill and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics to safely operate the vehicle under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions to provide emergency and patient transportation
• Shall have skills to read highway maps - program GPS devices - read and follow instructions in order to locate and complete assigned tasks
• The Supervisory Paramedic adheres to traffic ordinances and regulations pertaining to operation of emergency vehicles
• Will prepare appropriate patient and vehicle use documentation and reports to ensure medical requirements are met
• After each trip - replaces linens - blankets - and other supplies
• sends supplies and equipment for sterilization - and ensures vehicle is ready for the next run
• Performs thorough safety and operator maintenance inspections and makes minor repairs on a variety of emergency ambulances - patient transport vehicles - and medical equipment
• The Supervisory Paramedic ensures that the vehicles are kept clean and neat
