In this integral role you will perform tests in all areas of the laboratory such as: chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis and immunohematology. Use optical, photometric, electronic and automated instrumentation. May participate in quality assurance, safety, infection control and disaster activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation. ? Collect blood specimens by venipuncture for all areas of laboratory, when necessary; Evaluate specimens for acceptability; Accurately and appropriately test specimens/samples according to established protocols and procedures; Record and report specimen test results in a timely manner. ? Report STAT, abnormal and critical value results; document special handling for test results that do not meet established criteria. ? Accurately analyze and evaluate quality controls; document controls used; and report anomalies. ? Calibrate, standardize, and maintain instruments following established procedures; perform quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents and procedures; recognize malfunction and out-of-control test results and take corrective action. ? Troubleshoot instrument problems, reagents and patient specimens when necessary following established protocols. ? Prepare reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedure. ? Comply with all infection control and patient safety protocols; attend all required safety training programs; follows the established exposure control plan. ? May lead the work of assigned Medical Laboratory Technicians, Phlebotomists, or other designated personnel. ? Maintains accurate and continued documentation. Documentation meets current standards and policies. ? Follow established quality control procedures, conduct quality control reviews and report problems. ? Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. ? Assists in orientation and training of new staff/students as necessary. ? Keeps current with principles and practices, regulations, and standards that apply to healthcare. ? Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or other science specialty such as Biology, Chemistry or Physical.
Required Licenses: N/A
Required Certifications: Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the Board of Registry of American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the National Certification Agency, preferred. (Certification as a medical technologist by the American Medical Technologist is acceptable.)
