Under the general direction of the Surgical ServicesManager, and/or SDCU Charge Nurse, the endoscopy technician performs a variety of duties including preparing for, assisting during, and cleaning up after invasive endoscopy procedures. The endoscopy technician provides patient care in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.
Qualifications
Minimum Education/Experience:
Equivalent to four years of high school.
Prior training as an EMT/MA preferred.
A minimum of one year of previous hospital experience is preferred.
Responsibilities:

3.Prepares procedure room with equipment, instruments, and supplies in accordance with procedure and physician preferences.
a.Functions under direct supervision of Registered nurse/Physician.
b.Maintains and restocks supplies and equipment.
c.Reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate person.
4.Passes instruments and supplies to physician as needed. Operates equipment as applicable. Acquires additional supplies and equipment during procedure as required. Monitors correct usage of equipment and supplies.
5.Decontaminates and processes endoscopes and equipment. Utilizes peroxyacetic acid/organic peroxide sterilizer.
6.Handles specimens appropriately.
7.Assists in maintaining documentation.
8.Transport patients and assists with positioning of patient.
9.Maintains a safe environment for patients and personnel by utilizing and enforcing principles of infection control and safety practices, including universal precautions.
10.Performs job responsibilities in a manner consistent with customer service goals and objectives of the
department and hospital.
11.May administer the following medications under the direct supervision of the physician:
Medications are administered by lavage or spray only:
a.Benzocaine Spray
b.Xylocaine
c.Epinephrine
d.Mylicon
11.Participates in the department?s Quality Assessment and Improvement Plan as appropriate to the job responsibilities.
12.Maintains competency through:
a.Division core competencies.
b.Department core competencies.
c.Attends other programs as pertinent to job responsibilities.
13. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related patient needs appropriate to the age of the patients served.
14.Performs all other related duties as required as requested by the Director, Manager, or Charge Nurse
a.May include patient observations including but not limited to vital signs and patient procedure prep
b.May include clerical duties.
15. Performs all other related duties as requested by the Charge nurse, Manager, and/or Director.
