ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides visionary leadership and strategic direction to produce real improvements in clinical practice and the quality of care and service to childbearing women.
Assists with providing professional leadership to the integrated hospital and community midwifery team. Acts as role model and advocate for woman-centered, evidenced-based care in line with the national agenda.
Explores current research, identifies areas for development and plans appropriate changes using research and experience to evaluate outcomes.
Works as an expert practitioner keeping abreast of current practices and maintaining clinical credibility by regularly participating in clinical practice.
Provides midwifery care to women in the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Including prenatal visits, antepartum testing, attendance during labor, vaginal deliveries, assisting with cesarean sections, repair of vulvar/vaginal lacerations, immediate and outpatient postpartum care.
Provides routine newborn care up to six weeks.
Provides midwifery care to women of all ages in the area of well-woman gynecology. Including family planning and birth control, sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, diagnosis and treatment of minor gynecological problems and menopause.
Participates in the Midwifery Services peer review, meetings, and projects.
Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case.
Makes preliminary diagnosis, directs, prescribes or provides treatment, or arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required. Bases decision upon information obtained, professional midwifery knowledge and skills and prescribed policies and procedures.
Ensures preparation of timely, appropriate medical records for all patients seen to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data needed to provide comprehensive medical care.
Independently provides routine care for pregnancy, birth and well woman care.
Gives total patient care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up services.
Conducts outpatient clinics making observations appropriate to the outpatients underlying disease and treatment plan, including current symptoms. Reviews the patient’s medications, diet, therapy course, and adherence to management plan and patient observations. Modifies regimen as indicated. Instructs and counsels patients as required.
Refers patients to appropriate contracted medical or other government facilities providing full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that cannot be adequately provided on site.
Coordinates and integrates information to assure the provision of timely follow-up care as required.
Works closely with Allied Health professionals (Community Health Nurse, Social Workers, Health Education, etc.) in the provision of broad healthcare services.
Serves as a consultant in the field of midwifery to other members on the FDIHB Medical Staff.
Serves on hospital committees as assigned.
Serves as a member of the Medical Staff and is responsible for all associated duties including following Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules & Regulations, participates in the performance improvement activities, which are coordinated with the hospital wide Performance Improvement (PI) programs and ensures that the department and subordinate departments are in full compliance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and hospital standards.
Provides emergency care as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS Experience:
Three (3) years of Certified Nurse Midwifery Experience.
Education:
Completion of an accredited Master’s Degree in Midwifery.
Active Board Certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
Active unrestricted Midwifery license in any U.S. State or Territory.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and maintain certification.

Fort Defiance Indian Hospital a 245,000 square foot facility is a state of the art rural hospital that opened in August 2002. The hospital is located in the beautiful high-desert climate of Northeastern Arizona, about 8 miles north of Window Rock, Arizona (the capitol of the Navajo Nation).
Fort Defiance Indian Hospital boasts a 24/7 Community Hospital Emergency Department, and is licensed for 56 inpatient beds including: an Intensive Care Unit; a Medical-Surgical Unit; a Pediatric Ward; an OB/GYN Ward; and an inpatient Adolescent Psychiatric Care Unit.
In 2004, Fort Defiance Indian Hospital accumulated over 235,000 outpatient visits to its 65-exam room Ambulatory Care Center and 24 chair Dental Clinic. Currently the facility employs over 850 staff. Adjacent to the hospital is a new 193-unit government housing area. Public elementary, mid-school and high school are 300 feet to ½ mile away.
