General Description of Role
The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Strategic Analytics and Consumer Insights is a key member of the strategic planning leadership team for Duke Health. This position will lead the department's development and management of data analytics and customer insights to deliver robust strategic recommendations. We are looking for an experienced, forward thinking and data driven leader with strong background in analytics, deep industry knowledge and expertise, and experience building business intelligence solutions. By leveraging primary and secondary research, this role will extract actionable insights to ensure competitive position, increase performance and support consumer preferences. A storyteller at heart, this position will build effective insights and stay abreast of industry trends to amplify our strategy and competitive position. This position will report directly to the Vice President, Strategic Planning & Business Development.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Develop plans and programs as a strategic partner by leading a team that provides objective data and analysis in support of Duke Health goals.
Serve as a subject matter expert for analytic tools, strategic intelligence and consumer insights to deliver actionable information in support of strategy development.
Develop and support comprehensive strategic plans through primary and secondary research to understand consumer pain points, sentiments, & behaviors. Translate those into actionable insights and strategies
Develop and test key value propositions, tactics, to accelerate goal achievement
Monitor and analyze the competitive landscape, service area, industry, Duke Health performance, and consumer perceptions to inform opportunities for growth, innovation, and positioning
Essential Responsibilities
Data Standards
Provide leadership for all analytic aspects of the work performed by the department.
Lead in development of data and analytic standards for the department.
Serve as department expert on data resources across the institution and appropriate uses.
Lead data governance within the department and serve as the department representative to various other departments or institutional committees working through these issues.
Analytic Tools
Evaluate existing available analytic tools and make recommendations regarding their utility and appropriate use. Serve as department expert on these tools and ensure optimization of their use.
As appropriate, provide training on available resources and tools to both internal and external constituents.
Evaluate and monitor new or alternative decision support tools and systems. Serve as the point person/expert for external data sources (e.g. contract negotiations, completion of RFI/RFPs, validation and correction of released data and research of new data sources).
Identify need for and spearhead development of new tools to facilitate department's functions.
Supervise database management activities.
Develop and oversee creation of internal planning tools and data resources. When applicable, develop leadership views and access to tools to allow for self-service analysis and guidance on strategic intelligence, based on data and insights.
Accountable for forecasts and model development to inform business plans and strategic decisions.

Consumer Insights & Competitive Intelligence
Assess analytic support needs. Oversee the production of objective data and analysis that enable Duke Health and Service Line leadership to surface issues, make informed decisions, and achieve strategic goals.
Lead advanced analytics and sophisticated model development as required by the priorities of the department to tell a story and present industry trends and strategic imperatives for Duke Health.
Identify and guide utilization of primary and secondary research to inform strategic development.
Provide guidance and recommendations regarding communication of significant analyses to lay and/or senior audiences.
Manage vendor relationships and assess analytic support needs. Evaluate and monitor new or alternative decision support tools and systems.
Oversee the prospective monitoring of external sources to project market trends and opportunities potentially affecting key lines of business at Duke Health; report findings regularly to leadership at multiple levels; share information and conclusions to guide decisions and actions.
Direct relevant activities with the North Carolina Hospital Association (and other applicable organizations) to influence statewide market data collection and reporting decisions.
Manage the monitoring of national and regional trends to identify new opportunities and threats for Duke Health and its business units.
Develop processes and tools for tracking and interpreting local, regional, and national market, industry, and competitive activity of relevance to support decision making that will position Duke Health for success in the future.
Identify opportunities and solutions for regular reporting and facilitated discussion of data and information that inform the organization of internal and/or external trends that have strategic implications.
Develop and maintain close working relationships with other departments that may advise on activities and trends in the external environment that could affect strategic needs or opportunities (e.g., Govt. Affairs, Real Estate, Payer Strategy).
In collaboration with the Sr/Director of Planning, lead the annual development of the Environmental Assessment for Duke Health and its various entities. Organize planning and analytics staff to create comprehensive assessments that create the basis for planning throughout the year.
Institutional and Divisional Support

Highly organized, prepared and persuasive communicator with the ability to explain complex issues in a simple way
Experience translating data into business insights using appropriate data engineering, analytics and visualization applications
Support the ongoing review and development of the Duke Health strategic plan and annual data analysis of clinical program performance.
Supervise and provide guidance to the planning staff as it relates to analytical tools, models, methodologies, etc.
Develop strong relationships with other departments that also serve significant analytical needs for the organization to facilitate access to data and consistent methodologies (where appropriate) for data usage. This will include working with Hospital and Corporate Finance, Performance Services, DHTS, Marketing, and other Duke Departments.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Managing Staff
Lead a small team of data managers/analysts in the successful execution of the jobs and responsibilities of the Department.
Provide indirect supervision and management in regards to the analytical activities of all planning staff.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
BA/BS degree in Business, Business Analytics, or related field is required
Master's or higher degree in Business, Business Analytics, or related field is highly desired
Experience
Ten years of progressive business experience in strategic planning, business and operations planning, market research, financial analysis or consulting. Experience in management is preferred.
Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare/hospital/academic medical center's operations and/or experience in a complex, matrix and academic medical center environments is a plus
Eight years of experience in the healthcare/IT industry is required.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
Certifications in patient access or patient accounting preferred.
