The Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the UF Department of Medicine, will provide strategic vision and leadership for the clinical, educational, research and professional development initiatives of this nationally recognized program. Applicants should be at the Professor or Associate Professor rank. The successful candidate will:

Serve as a key leader in Aging, Geriatrics, and Gerontology at the University, interfacing with other UF Health clinical and research programs in interdisciplinary collaborations. These include the UF Institute on Aging (IOA), UF Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC), Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. For qualified clinician-scientists, there are leadership opportunities in organizing and growing aging research through the UF Institute on Aging.

Clinical Highlights: The dynamic group of faculty and fellows in the Division of Geriatric Medicine within the Department of Medicine provide a full range of clinical services to address the needs of our aging patients. This includes primary care clinics at two locations, consultative geriatric care of inpatients at UF Health Shands Hospital, and care for outpatients at five skilled nursing facilities. There is significant additional demand for the Division’s clinical services, including for outpatient clinic visits and additional skilled nursing facilities that have requested our assistance. In the past fifteen years, the UF Geriatric program has consistently been highly ranked according to a broad range of objective metrics and has obtained the highest levels of patient satisfaction at UF. In addition, the UF Geriatric Division is among the best nationally ranked Geriatric specialties (42rd) and 1st in Florida according to US News & World Report.
Research highlights: The University of Florida is a top public research university and includes substantial resources to support teaching, research, and collaboration, including one of only two NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hubs in the state of Florida, the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) funded by the National Institute on Aging, and the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the adjacent VA Medical Center. Approximately 10,000 sq. ft. in the IOA-CTRB are dedicated to clinical research space. That space includes 1,000 sq. ft. of physical performance laboratory and 15 dedicated interview, assessment and examination rooms and a 25-meter corridor specially dedicated to performing walking testing.
The Institute on Aging acts as a hub for research on aging and Geriatrics. The Institute houses many affiliates creating a truly multi-disciplinary philosophy. Together, UF researchers are leading more than 100 active projects funded by the National Institute on Aging, with active project funding totaling approximately $74 million as of December 2023. The center is located in a new contemporary building with the latest in equipment and expertise in epidemiological, clinical, translational and technology research on aging. It is also closely aligned with theClinical and Translational Science Institute and theAlzheimer's Disease Research Center that offer a myriad of research services and expertise. The center’s faculty provide mentorship to trainees in 4 NIA-funded T32 programs. The Department of Medicine is a nationally renowned clinical and research team with over 300 faculty in 11 Divisions: Cardiovascular Medicine; Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism; Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition; General Internal Medicine; Hematology & Oncology; Hospital Medicine; Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine; Nephrology, Hypertension & Renal Transplantation; Palliative Care; Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine; and Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology. The Division of Hospital Medicine also hosts the Palliative Care Program. The department houses multiple major research centers, including the Clinical and Translational Research Institute, the Center for Inflammation and Mucosal Immunology, the UF Health Integrative Medicine Program, the Cell Therapy Research Network, and The Institute of Therapeutic Innovation. The department also plays major leadership roles in the UF Health Cancer Center and the UF Diabetes Institute.
The department supports 117 internal medicine residents and 90 fellows in fellowship programs, spanning our divisions. The department has 12 external clinic sites, and runs all internal medicine clinical services at both the UF Health S...hands Teaching Hospital (900 beds) and the adjacent Malcolm Randall VA Hospital (350 beds). Medicine services in Shands hospital include: MICU, Intermediate Medical Care Unit, Hospital Medicine, General Medicine teaching services, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Malignant Hematology & BMT, Oncology, Medical Observation Unit, the Endoscopy Center, the Bronchoscopy Center, Medical Cardiology, the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Departmental faculty also serve as Medical Directors for Liver, Kidney, and Pancreatic transplantation. The Department admits 20,000 patients a year to Shands, and sees 160,000 out-patients annually. In December of 2017, UF Health opened a new tower encompassing UF Health Heart and Vascular Hospital and UF Health Neuromedicine Hospital.
Departmental faculty hold over $24 M in annual NIH funding (direct costs), ranking 40th in the Blue Ridge Institute’s survey of all internal medicine departments in FY14. There are 11 faculty that serve on NIH or VA study sections, and another 105 that serve on a national medical society committee. There are 95 Departmental faculty that serve on editorial boards of journals, and 90 faculty with peer-reviewed extra-mural funding. Departmental faculty published 698 papers and 63 book chapters in FY14.
