The CUNY School of Medicine (SoM), located in the heart of Harlem, New York, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, the institution transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine in 2016. The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD degree (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master’s Degree (27-month program). CUNY SoM places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine and on training high-quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York’s medically underserved communities. As a major priority, CUNY SoM also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.

The CUNY SOM is currently seeking a Chairperson for the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM). The Department plays a critical and leading role in our mission-driven BS/MD program aimed at recruiting those who are under-represented in medicine and producing broadly educated, highly skilled primary care practitioners to provide patient-centered, community-oriented care to underserved communities. The Department's research agenda includes community and population health services, and policy research, psychiatric and chronic disease epidemiology, health behavior, community-based research, addiction and substance abuse disorders, HIV/ AIDS pain, and health cure disparities. The department is also looking to expand its research agenda. The Chairperson for the Department of CHASM duties include but are not limited to the following responsibilities:
•    In collaboration with the SoM Dean and CHASM faculty, create a strategic vision and devise a strategic plan for the department with a mission-aligned budget that is managed responsibly and updated annually; identify and obtain external funding and philanthropic opportunities to support the department.
•    Lead by example as Chair by having an extramurally funded program as PI, publishing papers in high-impact journals, fostering CHASM faculty development, enhancing the CHASM teaching and student training enterprises, and maintaining national prominence in the field as scholar. Work assiduously to assist colleagues in doing the same.
•    Oversee and implement all departmental operational activities of the CHASM Strategic Plan to successfully achieve the strategic goals in medical and health sciences education, including supporting student success and excellence research, faculty development, program development, process improvement across the education spectrum, optimizing the application of technology to community health and social medicine, and maintaining a fiscally responsible department budget by generating excess research revenues.
•    Provide consultation to advising on educational program design, development and implementation, and to infusing quality measures and continuous improvement as standards for CHASM. Examples include customizing faculty development programs in teaching and education and developing quality improvement diagnostics and skills-remediation programs for teaching faculty.
•    Collaborate with faculty and non-faculty leaders to advise on educational initiatives and program updates, including promoting innovation in educational scholarship, competency-based assessment, curriculum and teaching innovation, the use of novel technology, and enhancing educational quality, research, and the expertise of SoM teaching faculty to improve students' educational experiences.
•    Broaden and strengthen collaborations with other academic departments/institutions within and outside CUNY, public health organizations, policy makers, foundations, community-based organizations, and our affiliated clinical centers.
•    Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean, Associate Deans, and other Department Chairs to enhance student learning program evaluation, research scholarship, and innovation in faculty continuing education.
•    Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
M.D., PhD, EdD or relevant doctoral degree, as well as a record of significant achievement in profession or field of expertise and a minimum of 8-10 years of related management and academic experience at a senior level within academic medicine or higher education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Knowledge of LCME and ARC-PA requirements and accreditation standards and advanced experience and knowledge about healthcare compliance, regulatory affairs, and operations.
•    Demonstrated interest in population health, primary care, and health disparities.
•    Able to partner with clinical, research, and academic administrative leaders and knowledge of emerging health care trends and recognized leader in the health care administration.
•    Proven experience in curriculum development and assessment in medical education and strong understanding of the culture of academic medicine – especially in BS/MD programs.
•    Substantial knowledge and experience regarding competency-based medical education, faculty development, program evaluation, instructional design, learner assessment, and educational technology.
•    Exceptional and well-developed leadership, interpersonal communication, and team-building skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously for different stakeholders and meet project deadlines.
•    Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic medical environment Strong understanding of the culture of academic medicine and the ability to address faculty concerns.
•    Experience working with underrepresented, low income, and marginalized students experience working in health-related or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Medicine) fields or other health professional pipeline programs highly desirable.
•    Experience with quality curriculum development and assessment principals as it relates to health care disparities to improve the quality of care and health professional decision making.
•    Advanced understanding of the importance of diversity in academic medicine and the impact of educational and health care disparities on medicine.

Salary Range: $140,087 - $207,923
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
