DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The St. Charles Health System Pharmacy provides a broad range of hospital and outpatient pharmaceutical care services to deliver high quality, effective, safe, reliable, and affordable medication therapy for our patients.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Specialty Pharmacy Technician is responsible for actively and successfully navigating patient prescriptions, which may include, but not be limited to submitting prior authorizations, supporting providers by assisting with benefits investigation, submitting appeals, exploring patient medication assistance options, coordinating fulfillment of orders with dispensing pharmacy, and identifying/resolving barriers on behalf of the interdisciplinary care teams. This position does not directly manage other caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Financial Assistance & Prior Authorization
Performs insurance eligibility and verification of pharmacy benefits.
Supports the specialty / ambulatory pharmacist in communicating with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies to request prior authorizations.
Coordinates financial assistance, including co-pay assistance through grants and foundations, and manufacture assistance program enrollment and coordination.
Collects and reports data for financial assistance and other metrics.
Updates patient and claim documentation; performs daily billings, audits accounts for accurate submissions claims, and makes sure patient treatment reimbursements are processed effectively.
Patient Management & Adherence
Manages patients schedules for initial and follow-up visits with the Specialty / Ambulatory Pharmacist.
Enrolls patients into the Pharmacy Patient Management Program as appropriate.
Manages prescription renewals.
Prescription Procurement & Fulfillment
Coordinates fulfillment of specialty and/or complex medication prescription orders, including:
Scheduling medication delivery with patients for initial and refill prescriptions Performing introductory and refill outreach calls with patients enrolled in the patient management program. Referring all patients to clinical pharmacist as appropriate
Communicates effectively with the patient and clinical staff as needed for management of new orders and coordination of timely / appropriate refills.
Monitors inventory to maintainappropriate stock of medications and supplies.
Performs medication dispensing duties and other activities with scope of practice and is supervised by a pharmacist.
Performs data collection, tracks metrics, and updates key performance indicators (KPIs).
Confirms reimbursement, payment, and billing for medications dispensed by the pharmacy.

EDUCATION:
Required: High school diploma or GED.
Preferred: N/A.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Required: Pharmacy Technician license through the Oregon Board of Pharmacy.
Preferred: Certified Pharmacy Technician license (CPhT) through the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Minimum three (3) years as a Pharmacy Technician.
Preferred: Five (5) years as a Pharmacy Technician; Specialty Pharmacy, Patient Assistance, Prior Authorization experience.
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
SKILLS:
Strong interpersonal communication skills, ability to work independently and demonstrate good judgement, strong verbal, and written communication, proficient in Microsoft Office particularly Excel and Word; able to quickly learn other software programs and able to extract relevant information; strong organizational/administrative skills.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, carrying 1-10 pounds, operation of a motor vehicle for caregivers that are couriers.
Occasionally (25%): Sitting, bending, climbing stairs, lifting and carrying 11-25 pounds,use of clear and audible speaking voice and ability to hear normal speech level.
