Occ Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care supp ort partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurs e (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coo rdination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic c are andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popula tionneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected toa ssist the RN/LPN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individualis expected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacyof every patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpati ent care. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic policiesand procedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They ar e expected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral un it upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as neede d, with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate verbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriat ely in the electronic health record.
Work Performed
P repare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovi de manual assistance as required.Obtain and record patient data for medi cal records noting and informingRN/LPN of information collected.Administ er treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,but not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nailcare, be d-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel and bla dder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the pe rsonal needs and comfort of assigned patients.Participate in teaching ac tivities by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providers as nee ded.Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpingpos ition patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients.Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andreport any changes in patient's condition. Turn and position patients,set up an d feed patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinking water. Perform fingersticks for blood glucosetesting, with appropriatetraining , document and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, and trans portation of patients. Followstandard precautions and use personal prote ctive equipment as required.Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests o npatient specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish supplies an d equipment as required.Participate in own professional development by m aintaining requiredskills validation and attending educational offerings . Support thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.May also per form clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform otherre lated duties incidental to work described herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of procedures and techniq ues involved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients. Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsa fety precautions applicable to work in a hospital.Working knowledge of t he organization and physical layout ofthehospital.Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safetyprecautions.Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending,kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Theemployee must frequently lift or move objects and p atients weighing over35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equip ment.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Abil ity to document and communicate pertinentinformation using computerand/ or paper documentation tools.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships withpatients and hospital staff.Working knowledge of principles and practices of providing non-professional bedside patie nt care.Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.
