Overview

The Department of Laboratories, Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), is a full service laboratory, operating 24 hours a day. Laboratory Services are provided in Hematology, Immunology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Flow Cytometry, Cytology, Surgical Pathology, Microbiology, and Transfusion Medicine.¿ Additionally, BJH operates a Histocompatibility Laboratory (HLA), blood donor/Pheresis Service, a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, and Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Preservation Laboratory in support of the tertiary care mission of BJH and laboratory diagnostic needs of BJC HealthCare members and affiliates and other clients.¿ The laboratory oversees point of care testing hospital-wide. Laboratory analysis is performed on specimens of blood, urine, other body fluids, and tissue specimens submitted for testing on order of a physician or other health care provider approved to order laboratory testing.

Role Purpose
Performs a variety of pre analytic, analytic and post analytic laboratory duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Performs waived and moderate complex testing with appropriate training and competency, sweat chloride collections, EKG's, etc.
Under supervision, reports test results as appropriate.
Sorts and processes routine and specific high level specimens received by the lab--including multistep technical processing (i.e. Histology, Microbiology, Cytology, etc.). Ensures correct processing and packaging for esoteric send out tests.
Coordinates a simultaneous series of tasks accurately, including STAT orders and fluctuation in workload, prioritizing work to complete within scheduled hours and established turnaround times.
Inventory management, equipment cleaning, maintenance, loading, etc.
