Job Summary:
In your pivotal role as Resarch ASL Annotator, you will set up, conduct, and continue research tasks related to the annotation and analysis of American Sign Language (ASL) language samples and other ASL data following protocols including the appropriate recording of data and reporting of standard or variant results under minimal to moderate supervision. Additionally, you will assist in other lab and research functions.
NOTE: This position will offer remote, work-from-home capability, though if you are a local, Nashville resident and prefer working in the office at times, this is something we can accommodate.
This position is PRN and hours will be scheduled as needed to cover staff shortages, vacations, etc.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Annotates American Sign Language (ASL) language samples
- Analyzes ASL language samples and other ASL data and summarize the results
- Prepares research data for progress reports, and assist in preparing research data for presentations and publications
- Assists in training, supervising, and assisting research assistants conducting tasks related to the ASL language samples and data
- Recognizes problems and suggest solutions (e.g., revisions to the annotation manual based on new data), and assist in modifications as directed
TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
- Listening (Advanced): Demonstrates excellence in listening and often requested by others to summarize and interpret what transpired at meetings and during conversations. Demonstrates reflective listening by using phrases such as "Do I hear you saying...?? or "It sounds like...." Perseveres until all key points are explained. Always gives speakers the feeling of comfort and interest, focusing intently on the subject. Formulates responses and draws conclusions only after speakers are finished.
- Language Translation (Advanced): Demonstrates the uppermost levels of expertise in language translation in challenging and complex situations. Displays the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, and interpretations. Often takes a lead role in highly pressurized situations when there is a need to achieve results. Consistently delivers translation results in a creative and imaginative manner while setting a standard for others.
- Data Collection (Novice): Able to clearly define the goals and objectives of the data collection task. Demonstrates the ability to collect data critical to the preparation of proposals, the accomplishment of interviews, and client, vendor and team requirements. Successfully performs a basic data collection process within the context of assignments. Helps prepare surveys and questionnaires. Has conducted simple face-to-face and/or telephone interview surveys.
- Analysis (Novice): Capable of reducing quantitative and conceptual problems and situations to basic elements and parts, then classifying, evaluating, and drawing conclusions. Demonstrates the ability to sift through data to determine its most significant elements. Able to turn discrete data into meaningful and valuable information which contributes to the successful completion of job assignments. Clearly recognizes cause and effect relationships
