LOCATION
This position can be remote, hybrid, or in-office at one of our MIEC offices located in California or Idaho. Applicants in the Pacific and Mountain time zones will be given preference. Applicants in Hawaii or Alaska will also be considered.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position has the primary responsibility for providing PSRM services to MIEC members and staff, while applying principles of hospital risk management and quality improvement to further develop PSRM services and patient safety initiatives involving hospital and large group services.
COMPENSATION
Salary based on experience and location:
Hiring range for San Francisco Bay Area and Hawaii: $88,076 to $117,435
Hiring range for all other locations: $76,125 to $101,500

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Applies standard principles of healthcare risk management, such as incident reporting and investigation, risk analyses, and policies/procedures, to further develop PSRM services which can be applied in different healthcare settings.
Tracks and trends losses and evaluates the current practices that are leading to loss to design specialty specific programs with the goal of preventing harm to patients that lead to claims.
Collects, analyzes, and compares healthcare and medical malpractice claims data for internal and external use. Reviews relevant local and national literature to identify ongoing trends related to patient safety and reducing malpractice liability risks; develops educational material based on trends for internal and external use.
Works to develop partnerships with local medical societies, hospitals, and/or health systems to coordinate patient safety initiatives in regions in which MIEC insures.
Works with cross-departmental staff to provide specialized internal and external patient safety/risk management (PSRM) services to existing members. Responds to internal and external questions and provides advice about medical professional liability and PSRM issues as needed.
Designs, plans, and presents seminars on a variety of PSRM topics to groups from 10 to 200 in size, both in person and through videoconferencing; Participates in research, writing, and editing and posting PSRM articles, newsletters, and other written materials through social media.
Remains familiar with patient privacy/security laws including HIPAA, and strictly maintains patient and policyholder/member confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s (BS/BA) degree required preferably in nursing, life sciences, or another health-related field.
Licenses/Certification:
A valid driver’s license is required.
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) is required within one (1) year of hire.
Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience preferred in patient safety and risk management in a healthcare setting, and/or direct clinical experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations relating to healthcare, and the ability to conduct research into applicable laws and regulations.
Knowledge of healthcare structure and organization, including different healthcare providers and associated scope of practice.
Knowledge of medical professional liability concepts and standards of care, and the ability to research and integrate applicable guidelines from established authorities.
Ability to analyze medical records and quality issues, understanding of medical terminology and clinical systems, and basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and clinical medicine.
Proficiency in reading, understanding, and performing analysis of medical, claims, and financial data.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to customer service.
Proficiency in using software applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Power BI, and CoPilot) with familiarity with manipulating data tools (ie. Preverity, Candello, MPLA Data Sharing).
Willingness and ability to travel with overnight stays, as needed.
Organized, detail-oriented and capable of setting and meeting work-related deadlines; Ability to manage time and multiple competing priorities.
