JOB SUMMARY
The Sterile Processing Supervisor is accountable for supervising the distribution of supplies and equipment throughout the hospitals, clinics, operating room, nursing or other designated areas. This position will maintain optimum service levels, ensure the consistent high standard of supplies, and ensure that the department meets or exceeds the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirements, in a cost effective way. This position is accountable for managing one or more small sites with less than 10 FTEs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Oversees staff in the delivery of supplies and equipment throughout the hospitals, clinics, nursing or other designated areas. Assures the quality of service with respect to turnaround times. Assures appropriate staffing provided for all shifts of operation. Implements departmental performance improvement activities and assures ongoing staff participation.
Ensures general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage areas.
Establishes and maintains inventory levels by set standards, in coordination with units within the hospital, clinic, nursing or other assigned area. Establishes and monitors par level stocks and proper utilization.
Develops processing methods and supply control methods which will give materials to patient care. Makes rounds on each shift to ensure all chargeable items are in stock in nursing units. Sends emergency items to nursing units as required. Responds to requests, complaints or questions concerning equipment or supplies.
Monitors and helps with the processing and sterilization of instruments and trays for use throughout the hospital, and carries out contamination control measures. Provides materials which contribute to better technique of patient care and helps in decreasing the spread of contamination. Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. Provides instructions and in-service education to employees to assure optimal sterile technique and aseptic handling of all sterile items.
Processes patient rental equipment for cleaning between patients, monitors use and charges, and obtains equipment from outside services as required. Replenishes supplies and equipment.
Monitors preventative maintenance programs for equipment; and maintains inventory of equipment to meet patient care requirements in compliance with safety guidelines. Adheres to OSHA guidelines about safe handling of Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and product sterilized by same. Helps the Corporate Compliance Program by adhering to the Practices and Standards stated in the Corporate Code of Conduct and Code of Ethical Behavior.
Identifies and assesses areas that need improvement, and participates in process improvement needs.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
Knowledge of medical supplies, instrumentation, and interworking of hospitals and clinics.
Thorough knowledge of aseptic technique.
Knowledge of different types of sterilizers and how to monitor their effectiveness.
Well versed in all aspects of the ETO and Spill Plan Alarm System.
Excellent written and verbal communications ability.
Exceptional attention to detail, with time management skills.
Customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with providers, third party payers, physicians and staff from all departments within and outside the Company.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements.

SHIFT/SCHEDULE: Full time days, Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. with flexibility to work with night and weekend shift staff

EDUCATION - H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent
EXPERIENCE - 3 Years of Experience
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Cert Reg Central Service Tech (CRCST), Cert Sterile Proc/Distr Tech (CSPDT), Sterile Processing Mgmt Cert (CSPM), Cert Surgical Technologist (CST), License Pract/Vocational Nurse (LVN): Must have one of the following:
LVN or
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or
Certified Board Sterile Prcng&Dist (CBSPD) or
Certified Sterile Proc/Distr Tech (CSPDT) or
Sterile Processing Mgmt Certification (CSPM) or -- Certified Reg Central Service Tech through IAHCSMM (CRCST).
