Overview
*The purpose of this role is to use on the job learning to train an individual to become a Certified Phlebotomist. The term of the apprenticeship is 12 months with an on-the-job learning (OJL) attainment of 2.000 hours, job competencies, and supplemented by related technical instruction as is necessary to develop a practical and versatile worker.
- The first 6-8 weeks, the phlebotomy apprentice's time will be spent in the classroom and the department, completing instruction and practicing clinical skills
- 40-hours a week working and training will be the expectation for phlebotomy apprentices.
- All class materials, licensing and application fees related to the course are covered by Foundation Health Partners.
- The term of the apprenticeship is 12 months

This is a non-certified and/or entry level Phlebotomist role. This position is responsible for the collection and receipt of biological specimens, proper entry into the computer system, and preparation of samples for analytical testing and/or distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area. This includes responsibility for pre and post aspects of analytical testing. This position will also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. This position may perform duties associated with blood donor registration services.

Training Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm

Responsibilities
Performs specimen collection and patient preparation, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques as required. Aliquots and labels specimens according to established departmental procedures and practices, delivers specimens to the technical area in a timely manner and / or performs initial processing and preparation of samples for transport. Transport of patient specimens and/or patients, per guidelines. Performs registration processes, including collecting insurance information, verifying coverage of Advanced Beneficiary Notices, and obtaining authorizations and signatures. Verifies patient demographics, insurance, and diagnostic test information. Enters data into appropriate systems to ensure accurate documentation and billing. Focuses on quality by assuring that all work performed is accurate and complete. Initiates computer generated reports as required for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring. Completes documents and records legibly and accurately per site protocol. Maintains familiarity with departmental procedures. Uses appropriate documentation to record communications. Communicates with physicians, clinical and hospital staff, nursing and Health Information Management Services to resolve outstanding issues and/or patient concerns. Maintains laboratory equipment. Maintains clean, safe work environment and makes appropriate reagents/bleach. Performs other technical support functions as determined by the department. Trouble shoots routine problems within their area of responsibility. May perform assigned patient testing. May perform collections for drug and alcohol screening, following chain of custody protocols. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess the intent to become a Phlebotomist Non-Certified or Phlebotomist Certified, as well a desire to grow their career within the organization.
- High school diploma/GED. Must be a least 18 years of age.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats. Must be able to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling. Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling infectious agents.
- Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats. May be required to possess a valid driver's license and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience of at least six months in a clinical laboratory setting or completion of phlebotomy school.
- Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
