The role you’ll contribute:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs various laboratory procedures in assigned areas as licensed/certified. Work customarily involves analytical testing of blood and/or human biological specimens. Analytical laboratory testing generally requires a moderate to high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise in licensed area(s). Depending on campus and department, various pre-and post-analytical work processes are included in the work duties customarily performed; on-call hours may also be required. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Ability to work all assigned areas of the clinical bench when needed and provides clinical expertise to MLS staff.
· Reads, examines, and interprets complex test results as needed
· Serves as a resource and addresses complex tests/procedures
· Acts as subject matter expert on testing platforms and operations.
· Manages instrument maintenance and troubleshooting practices
· Leads quality control and quality assurance testing to ensure accuracy and reliability of testing in assigned lab section
· Ensures section policy and procedures are kept up to date, making revisions as needed. Writes new procedures when needed. Manages document control in area.
· Assists with data collection and special projects, as assigned
· Assists with department orientation and trains medical laboratory staff in assigned area. Appropriately documents orientation and training of new employees and medical technology students to ensure competency before independent work may occur.
· Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include general and analytical equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation; specimen collection as needed; biological specimen processing; cleaning and disinfection of selected or assigned laboratory equipment and spaces; quality control and calibration performance; and other pre-analytical activities.
· Ensures proper documentation for all deviations from policy/ quality control
· Educates oneself and section staff in ongoing clinical advancements.
· Manages section Proficiency Testing, consistently adhering to federal and state regulations as well as Institutional policies; develops corrective action when needed.
· Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, reporting results (including highly abnormal results) in accordance with established procedures. Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, neonatal through geriatric patients
· Provides input on team member performance to Lab Manager for performance reviews.
· Ensures there is adequate staff scheduled to effectively and efficiently run the section.
· Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment
· Manages quality assessment and technical oversight, problem solving, scheduling, interviewing applicants, provides input for staff performance, oversees training and competency evaluations
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
Follows and ensures adherence of staff, to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
· Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision
· Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities
· Ability to operate computer systems to maintain patient documentation, testing records, and other related documents
· Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings
· Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
· Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English
· Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
· Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology field
· 3 years of clinical laboratory experience
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
· Must hold a certification from one of the following Medical Laboratory Scientist (American Society for Clinical Pathology), or Medical Technologist (American Society for Clinical Pathology), or Medical Technologist (American Medical Technologist), or Medical Technologist (American Associate of Bioanalyst); Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist

Ensure laboratory is ready for inspections. (CAP, Joint Commission).

Establishes and performs preventative/corrective maintenance of equipment and instrumentation.
Reviews and provides any necessary corrective actions with Quality Control results.
Reviews and updates core lab using Lean Tools and principles.
Reviews and provides any necessary corrective actions with Proficiency Testing.

Bachelor’s Degree
2 to 5 Years of Position-Related Experience
Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) certification or equivalent or advanced degree and able to meet CLIA’s 88 standards for high complexity testing
5 Years of Position-Related Experience Preferred
