General Summary
Under general supervision, promotes effective laboratory function and test quality in the administration and performance of various noninvasive vascular blood flow tests.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
A. Performs various noninvasive tests, at the request of attending physicians, in the Vascular Laboratory. Tests performed may include: duplex imaging of lower and upper extremity arteries and veins, carotid arteries, mesenteric, aortoiliac, hepatoportal, as well as Doppler physiological testing and TCD exams.
B. Determines which series of tests to give patient based on responses to previous tests and physicians' recommendations.
C. Reports abnormal results immediately to referring physician, being sure to document particulars regarding such communication in patient's chart according to department policy and procedure.
D. Explains disease patterns and writes preliminary interpretations of test results for final physician interpretation.
E. Other Duties May Include:
- Interacts on a technical level with internal biomedical engineering personnel and external medical service representatives who are assessing equipment problems and demonstrating new machines, respectively.
- Reviews inpatient charts, speaks with attending medical personnel, and interviews patients to acquire information concerning cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular histories, or conditions causing alterations in test results or infectious processes requiring special equipment or procedures. May recommend additional precautionary procedures where appropriate.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
- Assists in lab operations, answering questions, providing general direction, and assisting with patient scheduling.
- Keeps credentials current, as well as, updated technical expertise in vascular field by participating in ongoing development activities, such as: attending relevant professional conferences as instructed by department head, seminars and reading relevant technical literature.
- Trains medical students, fellows, ultrasound students assigned to the vascular lab area in vascular testing methods and related procedures.
- Participates in vascular research, gathering data or other designated activities under the supervision of the Medical Director for the Vascular Laboratory.
- Performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications
- Completion of a high school level of course work with attainment of a high school diploma or a State High School Equivalency Certificate (GED). Graduation from a CAAHEP approved program in diagnostic ultrasound technology, preferred. Certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist via ARDMS or Registered Vascular Specialist via CCI.
- Minimum of one year work experience performing vascular ultrasound testing preferred. Additional technical experience in a hospital setting preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, vascular lab practices, operation of specialized ultrasound and vascular blood flow testing and related equipment, as well as universal safety precautions. Knowledge of how to evaluate arterial waveforms and test results in general.
- Ability to evaluate the patient's general condition upon reading individual charts in order to apply appropriate testing.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
- Ability to lift 20-30 lb. test equipment, and assist in lifting patients from wheelchair to bed; ability to walk 30% of the time to various areas of the hospital, pushing and pulling equipment cart on a regular basis; ability to stand for extended periods (approximately 60%) of the time, mostly while administering tests to patients.
- Effective oral and written communication skills are necessary in communicating with other medical personnel, including attending physicians, and in accurately explaining and documenting test results.
Working Conditions
- We are looking for someone to fill a 3/12's or 4/10's roll. The position offers self-scheduling. Some weekend, holiday, and overtime may be required.
- Work requires occasional lifting of equipment and patients, and regular walking, standing, and pushing and pulling of equipment carts.
- There is potential for exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases, open wounds, and Staph infections requiring observance of "Universal Precaution" procedures and other safety measures when warranted in the work environment.
