Overview
The Patient Transport and Lift Team is responsible for safely lifting, moving, and transferring patients using appropriate techniques to ensure their comfort and safety. This role requires knowledge of various transfer methods to determine the safest approach for each patient. Team members must be skilled in-patient positioning, transport, and maintaining patient safety during movement, while adhering to hospital protocols for CPR, infection control, and equipment management. Collaboration with the healthcare team is essential to provide timely and efficient care, including performing purposeful rounding on patient units.
Responsibilities
Patient Transport: Safely transport patients throughout the hospital using appropriate safety equipment, including wheelchairs, stretchers, and other transfer devices. Ensure the safe transfer of patients to and from vehicles, and assist ambulatory patients as needed.
Patient Lifting: Expertly use safety equipment, such as gait belts and lifting devices, to lift and transfer patients. Collaborate with team members to ensure patient lifts are performed safely and effectively.
Patient Safety: Adhere to all safety protocols, including securing brakes on stretchers and beds and using appropriate lifting equipment to prevent injury. Prioritize patient comfort and safety at all times.
Timely Response & Communication: Respond promptly to pages and requests, maintaining communication with the department via walkie-talkie, phone, and CareAware. Ensure all requests are addressed within 10 minutes. Prioritize and dispatch patient escort trips as needed, and keep an accurate log of all lift technician duties, submitting it at the end of each shift.
Reporting & Documentation: Report any issues or concerns to the charge nurse, nurse supervisor, or nurse manager. Accurately document all tasks and actions taken during shifts.
Equipment Maintenance: Clean and sanitize stretchers and wheelchairs after each use, marking cleaned equipment with the "Green is Clean" tape. Maintain supplies at cleaning stations and ensure equipment is in good working order.
Patient Care Assistance: Support patient care by assisting with positioning, turning, lifting, and ambulating patients. Aid in patient movement during dressing changes, treatments, and other care procedures.
Team Collaboration & Rounding: Provide detailed handoff reports to the incoming shift. Collaborate with the healthcare team to perform purposeful hourly rounding and address patient needs.
Additional Duties: Proactively seek out additional tasks or assignments as directed by the Nursing Supervisor or Nurse Manager.
Qualifications
Experience: Previous patient care experience preferred.
Physical Requirements: Ability to frequently lift over 50 pounds and push/pull up to 200 pounds without lifting limitations.
Communication & Customer Service: Proven experience in roles requiring strong communication and customer service skills.
Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
Training & Competency: Must successfully complete required training for the Lift Team, Transport Team, and patient services orientation. Completion of body mechanics training with the Physical Therapy Department, with a mandatory physical competency evaluation every 6 months or as directed by the manager.
Physical Fitness: Demonstration of an ongoing exercise program. Gym membership reimbursement available up to $240 annually.
Skills: Ability to read, write, and perform basic math. Ability to work under pressure and effectively communicate with patients, hospital staff, and visitors.
Job Requirements: Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks following established procedures with minimal supervision. Must be able to meet the heavy physical demands of the role without restrictions.
