Summary:
The Breastfeeding Medicine Advanced Practice Provider will provide comprehensive breastfeeding support, education, and medical care to both mothers and infants. The APP will work collaboratively with lactation consultants and pediatricians, to ensure optimal care and support for breastfeeding dyads. This role focuses on managing common breastfeeding issues and providing anticipatory guidance, while also addressing more complex breastfeeding challenges requiring medical intervention.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Care:
Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for common breastfeeding issues.
Manage complex breastfeeding issues.
Perform breastfeeding assessments, including evaluation of milk transfer, infant feeding behaviors, and maternal health in relation to breastfeeding.
Prescribe medications and provide guidance on pharmacological interventions related to breastfeeding.
Order and interpret laboratory tests for both mother and infant to assess conditions that may affect breastfeeding.
Collaborate with lactation consultants for comprehensive lactation management support.
2. Patient Education and Counseling:
Educate families on breastfeeding techniques, positioning, and infant nutrition.
Offer anticipatory guidance on breastfeeding duration, weaning, and managing breastfeeding in the context of maternal return to work or illness.
Support maternal mental health during breastfeeding, offering resources for postpartum depression and anxiety if needed.
3. Collaboration and Consultation:
Work in collaboration with pediatricians and other healthcare providers to coordinate breastfeeding care.
Act as a liaison between lactation services and medical teams.
Participate in case discussions, clinical rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
4. Documentation and Compliance:
Maintain thorough, accurate, and timely medical documentation of all patient interactions.
Adhere to all state regulations for APP practice and comply with institutional policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with breastfeeding-related policies, HIPAA, and Ohio state laws regarding breastfeeding support.
5. Continuous Education and Professional Development:
Stay current with research and best practices in breastfeeding medicine through continued education and professional development.
Participate in community outreach and education regarding breastfeeding support and advocacy.
Engage in ongoing education and certification, as required by the State of Ohio.

Qualifications
Experience:
Experience in breastfeeding medicine or lactation support is highly desirable.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of breastfeeding physiology and pathology.
Ability to independently manage patient care with a focus on breastfeeding support.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Empathy and cultural sensitivity in working with diverse populations.
Working Conditions
Primarily clinical setting in outpatient breastfeeding medicine.
Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required to support breastfeeding mothers? schedules.
Education, Licensure, and Certification
Current licensure as a Family Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of Ohio.
o *APRNs must also maintain RN licensure
National certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C).
FNPs must have a Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nursing.
PAs must have a Master?s or Doctoral Degree in Physician Assistant studies.
