Medical Director of Palliative Care Service at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital
The University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine is recruiting a physician leader for the position of Director of the Palliative Care Service (PCS) in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). ZSFG is a premier safety-net hospital and trauma center run in partnership with the city of San Francisco and UCSF since 1873. ZSFG is one of the leading clinical sites for the UCSF School of Medicine, which includes a robust fellowship program in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
We seek a physician leader who will be responsible for the strategic, clinical, and administrative oversight of the palliative care service (PCS) and is passionate about providing high-quality palliative care to patients who are vulnerable and marginalized. This faculty position is eligible for appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The PCS is part of the Division of Hospital Medicine, which receives funding from the UCSF Department of Medicine at ZSFG and is supported by ZSFG health system leadership. Specific responsibilities for the position will include: • Developing and implementing strategic plans for the growth and improvement of the ZSFG Palliative Care Service. • Medical directorship of the inpatient and outpatient palliative care services at ZSFG, including faculty and staff clinical supervision. • Manage the palliative care service budget in partnership with the division manager. • Attending on the inpatient palliative care consult service, including teaching and supervision of rotating fellows and other trainees. • Teaching UCSF trainees rotating on the Palliative Care Services at ZSFG • If desired, there will also be opportunities to attend in the outpatient palliative care clinic.
This role involves overseeing the interprofessional team in providing expert symptom management, advance care planning, connection with community resources, and psychosocial and spiritual support to improve the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses and their families. The director will have a UCSF faculty appointment, teaching opportunities, and protected time for academic activities such as quality improvement and educational innovation. The ZSFG Palliative Care Service has strong connections to our counterparts in the Division of Palliative Medicine at UCSF Health and the Hospice and Palliative Care service at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health System.
Our division highly values leaders who will contribute to the diversity of the ZSFG physician workforce and whose background and experience align with our mission of providing high-quality care for the diverse patient population ZSFG serves. We encourage applicants who may not have all the desired qualifications to apply. Positions include a faculty appointment at the University of California San Francisco, a flexible schedule, and a competitive benefits package.
