The Memphis VA Medical Center has an opening for an on-site Hematology-Oncology Physician that offers a dual academic appointment with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The position reports directly to the Section Chief of Hematology Oncology and is administratively responsible to the Chief of Medicine (Specialty Care). The Hematology-Oncology Clinic consists of three physicians and a host of medical support staff.
The Medical Center consists of one main campus and ten community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). It’s a 1a complexity tertiary care facility and part of the largest healthcare system in the world. It’s located in one of the fastest growing Veteran population regions in the United States. The facility provides comprehensive care to over 47,000 Veterans in a 52-county area of Western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, and Northeast Arkansas. It includes 236 inpatient beds with a 26-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit and offers in-house Radiation Therapy. It is a teaching hospital, providing guidance to a full range of residents, fellows, and patient care services, using state-of-the-art technology.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Clinical practice, supervising and teaching fellows, residents, and medical students.
Conduct rounds with fellows, residents, and medical students in inpatient settings.
Provide consultation in Hematology-Oncology, both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Share attending call responsibilities, covering some nights, weekends, and holiday calls as needed.
Works as a member of Specialty Care, multidisciplinary health care team that collaborates with other members of the team to provide care to Veterans.
Initiate appropriate referrals and consultations to other clinical services and order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies.
Validate the effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment.
Conduct patient follow-up as appropriate for health promotion and disease prevention.
Include patient, family, and caregivers in planning care and establishing realistic, measurable goals for health maintenance/improvement.
Record/document health appraisal information, clinical assessments, treatment decisions, plan of care, ongoing management and the therapeutic outcomes, medication orders, diagnostic tests, referral consultations, accomplishing all using the electronic comprehensive patient record system (CPRS) daily.
Exhibit leadership in initializing changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies.
Stay informed on developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing education.
